South
Ronaldsay is the southern most island of the
Orkney archipelago, lying closest to mainland
Scotland. Its principal village is the
picturesque St. Margaret's Hope which has many
allributes and attractions including one of
Scotland's finest restaurants and Orkney's
longest established craft shop. The area is
steeped in history, with Norse connections, The
Hudson Bay Company, herring and oil having left
their mark. |

|
In
August, South Ronaldsay hosts The Boy's Plough mg
Match, an unique and ancient festival, which
takes place on The Sand 0' Wright, one of several
sweeping sandy beaches which are easily
accessible on the island. Pre-history is evident,
too, in the shape of the remarkable Tomb of the
Eagles, as well as the odd standing stone and
broach. The island offers many fine walks,
whether on beach or cliff, where spectacular
views often reward the visitor with sightings of
puffins and seals. Come for a day or stay for a
week you'll find plenty to see and do, from
visiting our studios, where you will be assured
of' a warm welcome, to exploring all aspects of
this many faceted island. |

Throughout
the centuries, artists have game stimulation from
each other, resulting in the formation of
artistic communities. The island of South
Ronaldsay has become such a place, where the.
Qualities of life, light and landscape have drawn
and captivated many over the years. Through being
part of this community, a group of artists from
different backgrounds and a wide range of
disciplines have come together to form "Open
Studios". Those taking part in "Open
Studios" share a common desire to remain
central to the creative process, despite the
pressures of today's enterprise culture. We hope
visitors will feel free to drop by and experience
the mechanics of artistic endeavour at first
hand, and at the same time explore an island
landscape with its remote and beautiful corners,
which have inspired our work over the years. |
